Zhengzhou No. 53 Middle School Entrance Facade Renovation Project | Fabrication and Installation Records for 12-Meter Steel Structural Gate Columns

Release Time:

2026-05-15

The entrance façade of Zhengzhou No. 53 Middle School was renovated to enhance its visual impact. Henan Jingtian undertook the project, completing structural steel detailing, fabrication, coating, and on-site hoisting and installation, ultimately achieving a dignified, aesthetically pleasing appearance with clear and legible display of the school’s name.

In addition to its everyday function of facilitating pedestrian access, the school entrance also serves as a platform for showcasing the campus’s image.

The original façade of Zhengzhou No. 53 Middle School, having been in use for an extended period, no longer meets the school’s current aesthetic and functional requirements. The administration seeks to revamp the school’s entrance while preserving the existing structure, creating a more dignified overall impression and enhancing the visual prominence of the school’s name.

In the new design, a set of steel portal columns has been added on the façade side to display the school’s name. The columns stand approximately 12 meters tall, with cross‑sectional dimensions of about 2 meters by 1.6 meters, and their main structure is a box‑type tubular truss.

However, this also raises a critical question: for an irregular steel structure of this size, who can handle the fabrication, and who will be responsible for on-site construction and installation?

For school projects, beyond fabrication capabilities, construction safety, on-site coordination, and practical implementation experience are of paramount importance. After careful evaluation, the school ultimately chose to partner with Henan Jingtian.

Due to the large overall dimensions of the components and the need to account for subsequent transportation and on-site lifting, prior to formal fabrication, the project…

Henan Jingtian first carried out detailed design and component breakdown based on the design drawings, followed by fabrication.

1. Deepen the processes of drawing breakdown and machining preparation.

The deepening phase primarily confirmed the following:

• Square tube specifications: Load-bearing columns use 160×160×6 square tubes made of Q355 steel.

• Node connection method: welding

• Lifting Plan

For box-type structures of considerable height, early-stage dimensional control directly impacts the quality of subsequent installation. Therefore, during the detailed design phase, considerations were given to transportation, lifting, and on-site installation conditions.

Upon completion of the refinement, the project officially enters the manufacturing phase.

2. Cutting of square tubes and fabrication of steel structures

The workshop first uses laser cutting equipment to cut and blank the square tubes, then numbers them according to the detailed fabrication dimensions.

Due to the unique angles of certain node locations, they must be laid out separately to ensure accurate assembly dimensions.

After cutting is completed, proceed with the assembly of components.

Workers perform positioning, alignment, and tack welding according to the drawing dimensions, followed by full‑length welding.

Given the considerable overall height of the steel columns, it is necessary to repeatedly verify the overall dimensions and verticality during welding to prevent deviations during subsequent on-site assembly.

After welding is completed, the weld area is then ground and finished.

For certain areas where aluminum panels will be installed later, surface leveling was carried out in advance to facilitate subsequent exterior finishing work.

3. Anti-corrosion Spraying and Keel Framing

Following completion of the component inspection, painting and anti-corrosion work will commence.

Steel structures exposed to outdoor environments for extended periods benefit from spray coating, which enhances their overall corrosion resistance and weatherability while extending their service life.

After the spraying is completed, proceed with the installation of the keel.

4. Component Transportation

The final components are loaded onto trucks and transported to the project site.

5. On-site Lifting and Gable Installation

To minimize disruption to the school’s regular teaching activities, the company and the school administration jointly decided to carry out the façade renovation during the May Day holiday. Upon arrival of the steel columns at the site, installation of the main structural components commenced.

As the construction area is located near the school’s entrance and exit, lifting and installation operations must be coordinated with the actual site conditions during construction.

After the main steel structure has been installed, proceed with:

• Aluminum panel installation

• Renovation of the existing storefront façade

Throughout the installation process, on-site adjustments were made to the verticality of steel columns, the flatness of the keel system, and the edge detailing of the aluminum panels.

6. Official Use

Following the completion of the overall facade construction, the new school entrance has officially been put into service.

Compared with the previous façade, the new design is more visually striking in terms of overall height and the presentation of the school’s name, while also achieving a more cohesive and unified aesthetic.

Project Information

Project Name: Zhengzhou No. 53 Middle School Facade Renovation Project

Project Scope: Fabrication and Installation of the Steel Structure for the School Entrance Facade

Main structure: box-type tubular truss steel columns

Steel column height: approximately 12 meters

The construction scope includes:

• Detailed shop drawings for steel structures

• Laser cutting of square tubes

• Component assembly and weld joint

• Surface polishing treatment

• Anti-corrosion coating

• On-site lifting and installation

• Keel and aluminum panel installation

For this type of storefront project, in addition to the fabrication of the main steel structure, on-site installation dimensional control, coordination of exterior finishes, and seamless integration of the overall construction all directly impact the final outcome. From fabrication through to on-site installation, the project advanced step by step according to the construction schedule, ultimately completing the entire storefront renovation.
